Flat Back

In brief

  • What it is Reduction or near-absence of the normal thoracic curvature
  • Symptoms Muscle tension, fatigue, spinal pain, difficulty maintaining a standing position for a long time
  • Most common treatment Conservative (exercises, postural re-education, muscle strengthening)

Flat back

dorso piatto

Flat back occurs when the normal thoracic curvature is reduced or nearly absent.
Although it may seem like a simple postural variant, it can sometimes signal an alteration in the overall balance of the spine.

It can affect load distribution and predispose to compensations and tension in other areas of the body.

postural

Sintomatologia

The reduction of the physiological curves can change load distribution, forcing other segments of the spine, the pelvis and the lower limbs to compensate. This can promote

  • muscle tension
  • fatigue
  • spinal pain
  • difficulty maintaining a standing position for a long time

Assessment and treatment

Flat back must be assessed within the overall context of posture and spinal alignment.

Treatment can be conservative, based on:

  • specific exercises
  • postural re-education
  • muscle strengthening

or require more thorough assessments in cases associated with significant deformities or previous surgery.

A personalized approach to spinal conditions

Spinal conditions can present very differently from one patient to another.

Two people with the same radiological diagnosis can have completely different symptoms, just as a seemingly significant abnormality on an MRI may not be the true cause of the pain.

For this reason, a specialist assessment should not be limited to reading the imaging results, but must integrate the patient’s clinical history, physical examination, symptom analysis, neurological assessment and the impact of the condition on daily life.

The most appropriate treatment is not necessarily the most invasive one, but the one best suited to the specific situation. In many cases significant improvement can be achieved with conservative therapies, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, pain management or minimally invasive treatments. In other cases, when pain is resistant, neurological compression is significant or the deformity compromises function, surgery may be the most effective solution.

The ultimate goal is always the same: reduce pain, improve function, preserve the patient’s safety and choose a truly personalized treatment path.
