Scoliosis and Spinal Deformities

In brief

  • What it is Lateral deviation of the spine associated with rotation of the vertebral bodies (a three-dimensional deformity)
  • Symptoms Alterations in appearance and postural balance; in severe cases also compromised respiratory function
  • Most common treatment Conservative (observation, physical therapy, brace); surgical in severe or progressive cases

Scoliosis and Spinal Deformities

deformità

Scoliosis is a lateral deviation of the spine associated with vertebral rotation, capable of altering both the appearance and the function of the spine.
There are congenital, idiopathic, neuromuscular and adult degenerative forms.

If not properly monitored and treated, it can develop into complex deformities, affecting posture, movement and, in the most severe cases, even respiratory function.

Causes

Scoliosis is a lateral deviation of the spine associated with rotation of the vertebral bodies.

It is therefore not simply a “lateral curve,” but a three-dimensional deformity that can affect:

  • appearance
  • postural balance
  • in the most severe cases, respiratory function

Symptoms

There are various forms of scoliosis:

  • congenital
  • idiopathic (adolescent)
  • neuromuscular
  • syndromic
  • adult degenerative

Idiopathic scoliosis most often appears during growth, while adult degenerative scoliosis is related to disc and joint wear, loss of spinal balance and progressive deformity.

Assessment and treatment

Treatment depends on age, the degree of the curve, its progression, symptoms and functional impact. It can include clinical observation, specific physical therapy, an orthopedic brace or corrective surgery in the more severe or progressive cases.

A specialist assessment is essential to define the most appropriate path.

  • Medication therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Postural re-education
  • Further diagnostic investigation in more complex cases

A personalized approach to spinal conditions

Spinal conditions can present very differently from one patient to another.

Two people with the same radiological diagnosis can have completely different symptoms, just as a seemingly significant abnormality on an MRI may not be the true cause of the pain.

For this reason, a specialist assessment should not be limited to reading the imaging results, but must integrate the patient’s clinical history, physical examination, symptom analysis, neurological assessment and the impact of the condition on daily life.

The most appropriate treatment is not necessarily the most invasive one, but the one best suited to the specific situation. In many cases significant improvement can be achieved with conservative therapies, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, pain management or minimally invasive treatments. In other cases, when pain is resistant, neurological compression is significant or the deformity compromises function, surgery may be the most effective solution.

The ultimate goal is always the same: reduce pain, improve function, preserve the patient’s safety and choose a truly personalized treatment path.
