In brief
-
What it is A condition characterized by reduced bone mass, resulting in increased fragility and risk of fractures
-
Symptoms Compression fractures or vertebral collapse, acute pain, loss of height, progressive spinal deformity
-
Most common treatment Medical, with minimally invasive treatments in selected cases of vertebral fracture
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by a reduction in bone mass and an alteration of its internal structure.
This makes the bones more fragile and more exposed to the risk of fractures. At the spinal level it can cause vertebral collapse, chronic pain and progressive deformities of the spine, especially at older ages.
Causes
Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by:
- reduced bone mass
- altered bone microarchitecture
This makes the skeleton more fragile and more exposed to the risk of fractures, even following minor trauma or seemingly trivial movements.
Symptoms
At the spinal level, osteoporosis can cause:
- compression fractures
- vertebral collapse, often associated with acute pain
- loss of height
- progressive spinal deformity
- accentuation of thoracic kyphosis
In some patients the pain can become chronic and significantly compromise independence and quality of life.
Assessment and treatment
Prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis are essential.
In addition to medical therapy, in selected cases of vertebral fracture, specific conservative or minimally invasive treatments may be considered, depending on the stability of the fracture, the pain and the patient’s general condition.
A personalized approach to spinal conditions
Spinal conditions can present very differently from one patient to another.
Two people with the same radiological diagnosis can have completely different symptoms, just as a seemingly significant abnormality on an MRI may not be the true cause of the pain.
For this reason, a specialist assessment should not be limited to reading the imaging results, but must integrate the patient’s clinical history, physical examination, symptom analysis, neurological assessment and the impact of the condition on daily life.
The most appropriate treatment is not necessarily the most invasive one, but the one best suited to the specific situation. In many cases significant improvement can be achieved with conservative therapies, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, pain management or minimally invasive treatments. In other cases, when pain is resistant, neurological compression is significant or the deformity compromises function, surgery may be the most effective solution.
The ultimate goal is always the same: reduce pain, improve function, preserve the patient’s safety and choose a truly personalized treatment path.
