Low Back Pain

In Brief

  • What it is A painful condition affecting the neck region
  • Symptoms Sudden ("acute lumbago") or gradual pain, muscle tension, stiffness, limited movement
  • Most common treatment Conservative in most cases

Low Back Pain

lombalgia

Low back pain is pain localized in the lumbar region, one of the most widespread health problems overall. It can have a muscular, joint-related, discogenic or postural origin, but can sometimes also be linked to causes not strictly related to the spine.

Precisely because of this variety of possible origins, careful assessment is essential to identify the most suitable, personalized treatment.

Symptoms

Low back pain is pain localized in the lumbar region and is one of the most widespread musculoskeletal problems. It can:

  • appear suddenly, as in the so-called "acute lumbago"
  • develop gradually and become chronic

Causes

The causes can be numerous:

  • muscle tension
  • overload
  • postural alterations
  • stenosis
  • spondylolisthesis
  • degenerative disc disease
  • osteoarthritis
  • vertebral instability
  • non-spinal conditions

Precisely because of this variety of possible origins, there is no single treatment that works for everyone.

Assessment and treatment

Clinical assessment is essential to distinguish simple low back pain, often treatable with conservative approaches, from more complex forms requiring diagnostic testing or specialist consultation.

Particular attention should be paid when the pain is associated with:

  • fever
  • unexplained weight loss
  • trauma
  • neurological deficits
  • sensory disturbances
  • changes in bladder or bowel control

A personalized approach to spinal conditions

Spinal conditions can present very differently from one patient to another.

Two people with the same radiological diagnosis can have completely different symptoms, just as a seemingly significant abnormality on an MRI may not be the true cause of the pain.

For this reason, a specialist assessment should not be limited to reading the imaging results, but must integrate the patient’s clinical history, physical examination, symptom analysis, neurological assessment and the impact of the condition on daily life.

The most appropriate treatment is not necessarily the most invasive one, but the one best suited to the specific situation. In many cases significant improvement can be achieved with conservative therapies, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, pain management or minimally invasive treatments. In other cases, when pain is resistant, neurological compression is significant or the deformity compromises function, surgery may be the most effective solution.

The ultimate goal is always the same: reduce pain, improve function, preserve the patient’s safety and choose a truly personalized treatment path.
